Specialisation Overview
A unique opportunity in New Zealand, Culture+Context combines both studio-based and theoretical studies in Design with disciplines such as Psychology, Anthropology, Marketing, Maori Studies, Pacific Studies, Media Studies and Film, to name a few. Culture+Context allows students to creatively explore evolving theories, new concepts and historical ideas contributing to design within contemporary culture. Students will have the opportunity to design objects and environments, both real and virtual, within a critical, analytical and conceptual framework.
The Bachelor of Design Innovation (BDI) in Culture+Context is a cross-disciplinary qualification for students who have a strong interest in design and who seek professional career opportunities in a wide variety of design and design-related fields, both enhancing and complementing traditional design practice. A three-year programme, the BDI leads into a two-year Master of Design Innovation (MDI) for students wishing to reach a higher level of design thinking, reflection and resolution.
Culture+Context students will acquire a comprehensive knowledge of key historical and theoretical approaches and precedents in design as well as an appreciation for the contributions of design across material and visual culture and a diversity of other relevant disciplines. Graduates will have a strong grounding in issues and influences within the expanding field of design and design knowledge as expressed through a diverse range of media.
